Film Title: Bend It Like Beckham

Cast: Keira Knightley, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Parminder Nagra

Synopsis: It is about this Indian girl, Jesminder who goes after her football dream. She has a traditional family, parents who want her to go to college, marry an Indian guy and be like every other girl. However, Jesminder is so into football that she hopes one day she can be a professional footballer. The film talked about how she joined a female football team, keeping her parents in the dark, and finally caught the eye of an American scout and being given a chance to pursuit her dream.

If you are looking for David Beckham in the film, then you will be disappointed because except he is Jesminder’s idol and showed up for like a minute at the end of the film, this film has nothing to do with Beckham. Yet, it is one of my favorite football movie. Sports film are usually very inspiring and this is definitely one of the most inspiring one. There are plenty of football films on female nowadays, but this is not just about a girl who likes football, she is an Indian girl, to pursuit her dreams, not only she needs to fight against the gender issues, she needs to fight against her traditions, her cultural values and they are not easy. This film is just simply saying, everyone who has a dream, should be respected. Although it is easier to say than do.

Quote: ‘I don’t want Jess (Jesminder) to make the same mistake that her father made, accepting life, accepting situation. I want her to fight and I want her to win.’ said by Mr. Bhamra (Jess’s father)

Rating: 8.5/10

We know this is not a new film and you may have already watched it, but it is a great film worth watching again and again. :p There are a lot of football films out there and we really want to share one with you every month.
