Euro 2012: Group A Sum-up

Pretty sure quite a number of us (probably all!) were surprised by the outcome of the first two rounds, nothing else, just the unexpected results are enough. Or, you can add the poor referee quality (not that surprise as they barely improved) to it?

Group A
Probably the least surprising among all groups. Poland, being one of the host came out quite strong against Greece in their first game. The 2004 champion has passed their glory time, but still showed a lot of determinations as the game went on. Poland was the first to score and they were the team that created more chances, Greece was down to ten men right before half time due to a weird decision from referee. Yet, one man short didn’t give Poland any advantages, instead Greece managed to score their first goal at 51th minute. As the game went on, Greece was more in control than the host. When Szczesny was sent off, Greece was given a penalty but they missed it, also missed the golden chance to grab the precious 3 points. Second game which played between Russia and Czech was less dramatic. Russia dominated the game and earned their first victory with a 4-1 scoreline.

Russia is no doubt the strongest team in the group, but host always has some advantages, no? That’s why in second round, Poland managed to grab one point against this Russia team. With Greece lost to Czech by 1-2, below we will break down the group situation for you, and after today , we will know which two teams will be qualified to the next round:

Poland: In order to qualify, they have to win the game against Czech.
Czech: Definitely out if they lose the game, and will qualify for sure if they defeat Poland. But if the game turns out to be a draw, Czech has to pray that Greece wins their game by at least 6 goals.
Greece: Must win the game against Russia.
Russia: Draw or win the game against Greece can see them through. If loses, with Poland or Czech wins, Russia will be out. If the other game is a draw, Russia can still qualify if they lose less than 6 goals.

Our Prediction: Russia and Poland will qualify.
