Abolish Relegation and Promotion System?! Seriously?

According to BBC Sports, League Managers Association (LMA) chief Richard Bevan said that several foreign owners of Premier League clubs wants to abolish relegation and promotion system, which means no more relegation or promotion in England Leagues! The first word we can think of after reading the news is, Ridiculous! We can’t begin to imagine a league without relegation and promotion, at the same time we don’t share these owners’ concern on how much money they may lose due to relegation, because:

1. If not all, most of these foreign owners are rich. Rich to an extend that they can spend lots and lots of money buying players, I mean, look at Man City, look at QPR, when you have that amount of money, good players, or even good managers will be happy to work for you, well, at least, most of them. So unless all your players got food poisons for… say 8 months, there is no way the team will be any where near the relegation zone!

2. Are you sure a league without relegation and promotion will still attract audiences? Yes, we know all these teams have their fan base but there are also audiences who watch football for the excitement without supporting a particular team. If the relegation system is removed, except the first 4, okay maybe 6 teams which may need to fight for a place in Champions League or Europa, what are the rest of the teams going to do? Knowing they can’t fight for the champion and nothing will happen to them even they did badly?

3. Just a piece of advise to the owners, you can refer to the book Soccernomic if you haven’t read it already. Football club is NOT a business for you to make money. Ask around and see how many club owners actually earn a lot of money through their club? If you want money, find another business. Try airline, which you can ask Tony Fernandes for advise. Or maybe start a new hotel? Or a new restaurant? I am sure any of these can bring you more money quicker than owning a football club.

Well, what can we say? We hope this will not happen in the future. At least we think the LMA person will be smart enough not to let this happens.

Premier League Clubs Owned by Foreigners:Aston Villa, Blackburn, Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, QPR and Sunderland.
